Charles James “Sonny, Pop, PeePaw” Richter
August 1, 1938 – June 5, 2023
Charles was born August 1, 1938 and grew up in Flatonia, TX. He was saved and baptized at First Baptist Flatonia at Bible School. He moved to Houston, TX in 1956 and met the love of his life Sandra Lee Chancellor, they have been married for 66 years. They have two sons, Charles Jr. and wife Karen, and Ralph. Grandkids Nikki Richter and James, Cheerie Richter and Billy, Shyanna Richter Lewis and James, Eric Richter, Dallas Allmon and Holly, Tyler Allmon and Nadia, nine Great grandchildren and four Great Great grandchildren.
They moved to Channelview in 1969. In the early 70’s Charles and Sandra started their own trucking company and shop. Both boys were raised working in the trucking company. At the company’s peak it operated 25 power units, had two terminals and employed 40+ employees. Charles was the only salesman, managed the maintenance of the trucks and took care of all the contracts.
Charles and Sandra have always been very civic minded and they served their community well. Charles was elected to the Harris County Fresh Water District #6 and served 24 years. Upon retirement they named their new fresh water plant after him. Charles served on Channelview ISD School Board for 12 years. These are some more of Charles’ activities: Boy Scout Master 8 years, Masonic Lodge 60+ years, Cattle Raisers Association and Beefmasters Breeders Universal, FFA Adult Group 25 years, won Lions Club Business of the Year for the State, Young Farmers, Member of Chamber of Commerce, Served on YMCA committees, Project Graduation, Master Gardner and built flower beds for Flatonia Nursing Home.
Upon his retirement he built their house on the property he purchased previously over 29 years ago in Flatonia. They had always planned to build. And, enjoyed the fruits of their success.
Charles is proceeded in death by Dad, Charlie Jacob Richter; Mom, Francis Jurica; and Brother, Dennis “Dink” Richter.
A visitation for Charles will be on Friday, June 9, 2023 at Smith Funeral Home in Flatonia, TX from 4:00-6:00 PM. Funeral Service will be on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at Flatonia Baptist Church at 3:30 PM. Burial will be in OakHill Cemetery in Flatonia, TX.
