Glenda Michal Mach was born on September 8th, 1947, to Amanda Hazel Laufer Michal and Jerry Edwin Michal. She spent her early life in the Muldoon area near Buckners Creek. After her first day of school in Flatonia, she told her mom that she didn’t need to go back, as she knew everything they had talked about. In high school, she played saxophone and performed as a twirler and drum major for the band. She graduated as salutatorian of the FHS Class of 1965 and attended UTEP during the fall semester.
On December 4th, 1965, Glenda and Douglas Mach, her sweetheart of five years, were married. They moved to Austin to pursue their education at the University of Texas, where their first child, Richard Gene Mach, was born in 1967. Having earned their degrees, they moved to La Grange, where Doug taught math. Soon, they built a home in Flatonia, where Glenda taught at the junior high and Doug taught at the high school. They welcomed their second son, Christopher Ryan Mach, in 1972. As a family, the Machs enjoyed many excursions across the USA, a practice that Glenda and Doug continued in retirement. After a career in teaching and education spanning decades, Glenda retired from the Giddings State Juvenile Correctional Facility.
During her retirement, she took pride in her work at the Flatonia Public Library, applying for grants to improve the library for the community she had served for so many years. An alumna of UT, she was a devoted fan of Longhorn football and baseball. In addition, she had a special love for the ladies in her Sunday school class. Her faith was central to her life, and she faced the future with confidence in Christ.
Glenda had a gift for making people feel at home, and was known for her warmth, ever-present smile, and care for her home. She was an excellent cook, and her family loved her pork roast with carrots, potatoes, and gravy, along with her Mississippi Mud Pie and Angel Delight. She loved bringing family together for games of dominoes and cards, and enjoyed decorating and trying new things. She was generous, quick witted, and gave the sweetest hugs.
Glenda is survived by her husband of over 60 years, Douglas Mach, sons Richard Mach (Loretta) and Chris Mach (Don), grandchildren Joseph Mach, Hannah-Joy Mach (Zech), and Phillip Mach (Melissa), great-grandchild Jesse Mach, and first cousin Melba Fay Young.
Preceding her in death were her parents, grandparents Jaroslav and Annie Michal and Richard and Ola Laufer, aunts Emma Rebecek and Lottie (Frank) Young, uncle Emil (Alice) Michal, and first cousin Emil Michal, Jr.
If you would like to honor Glenda with a gift, memorial donations may be made to the Flatonia City Library, Flatonia Baptist Church, MD Anderson Cancer Center, or the Glenda and Doug Mach Flationia Scholarship Fund (via the https://www.flatoniaisd.net/business office).
